Through the years:

The company's history reaches back as far as 1886, and it has made decisive contributions to technical and economic development in the field ever since industrial manufacturing of electrical machinery began.

VEM's involvement with transport engineering played an important part in the early development of VEM's electrical machines. The significant milestones in this development were the construction and equipping of the legendary "Kummerbahn" (1893) and the "Hechtwagen" (1923) - the first German saloon-type tram car.

In the mid-1950s VEM specialised in the manufacture of medium-sized and large electrical machines. The development and production of traction motors for industrial and main line locomotives commenced in this period. Having supplied over 20,000 traction motors for all types of electric locomotives operating with the Deutsche Reichsbahn, over 8,000 auxiliary machines for rail vehicles and over fifty mobile rotary converters, VEM has made an important contribution to electric traction.

Over the decades VEM has become a centre of alternative and dependable long-term concepts for electrical machines in the transport sector.
