 The Motor Challenge program has been designed by  the European Commission to encourage industrial enterprises to improve the energy efficiency of their electric motors. Numerous studies showed that enterprises do not take decisions to select a new motor based upon its energy efficiency, even if considerable savings can be achieved.
The reasons for this are usually organizational or structurally, particularly:
- Within industrial enterprises the responsibility for decisions, which concern the energy consumption, is not clearly assigned.
- Buying authority is usually assigned to production and maintenance or divided under purchase and financial functions.
- The managing directors and technical manager are not aware of the possible future profits through operating efficiecies, and do not play any part in the decision.
Who needs to be aware of the Motor Challenge?
- The program applies to all motor users, manufacturers and planners of plants using electric motor. Companies can either participate individually or on an industry basis. Companies, which use motor driven systems, can request the Partner status.
- Companies, which supply equipment and services for motor driven systems, can support engine Challenge as an Endorser.
The VEM group with their production plants·VEM Saxonia work GmbH, Dresden/Germany·VEM motors GmbH, Wernigerode/Germany·VEM motors Thurm GmbH, and the European selling companies·Esmac Oy, Masala/Finland·VEM motors Norge AS, Stromme/Norge·VEM motors Austria GmbH, Wien/Austria·VEM motors U.K. Ltd., Bimingham/Great Britain will participate in the pilot project "Motor Challenge program" as Endorsers. The enterprises of the group will actively support the selling and the use of energy-optimized motors, generators and drive systems in its market activities. VEM motors GmbH launched its participation in the the Motor Challenge program at the Hanover Fair 2003 and is hosting an inaugaural meeting at Wernigerode on 4th June 2003.
